Oh, don't blame me ... I know this topic is probably about 5 years late :D

It's a fact that social networks is THE place where many "net"people spend time and keep in touch today. Small specific communities like RS which were self-sustained during many years shouldn't stay away any longer (as I did personaly :ninja: ).
Sure, SEO is important and still has to be improved. But social networking implementation on RS si maybe more urgent, see why:

The problem that RS is facing since 2 year (after a big hardware crash), is that players come and go and hardly meet each other in the gameroom.
Of course it's due to a lack of SEO to make RS better knowned on the web and be found by new players on search engines and game sites. But this is also due to the fact that RS, which is willing to be a players' community, doesn't use any of the dominant real-time communication tools that already existing communities use every day.
Of course, there is no scoop here. But if we want players to meet, it became obvious that we must at least enable RS players to :
- extend their personal network with the friends they meet on RS
- warn their friends by saying : hello, I'm on RS, come on and join the game!
- get some news from RS on their current social network tools
- make easy buzz about what they read on RS
- simplify RS registering process by using their existing social network account

In order to integrate such networking features, let's start from the most used networks FB and TW.
I spent a lot of hours reading FB and TW API those days, to see what could be done with the best value/work leverage on RS with or without Drupal. So here are the main things I've found:

To extend players' personal network:
- provide a TW and FB account field in personal information tab to show on posts and in the gameroom
- provide a follow me on TW link from the profile page, forum posts and gameroom by clicking on a player (I don't know yet how to do this with FB to add a friend as easily as a TW follower)

To warn their friends in real time by saying "hello I'm on RS":
- provide a buzz friends button in the gameroom to post a standard message to TW. I still have to find how to do it for FB but I know you can also allow your TW account to post automatically on your FB wall.

To get some news from RS on social networks:
- Provide a TW Follow button (for RS twitter account) and a FB Fan button (for RS Fan or group FB page) on the homepage and game page
- push automatically published news and new forum topics created to TW and FB (probably with http://twitterfeed.com/)
- enable modos to post for tournaments by sharing official RS accounts (maybe with http://www.tweetdeck.com/)
- still we have to manage different languages ... not easy to solve except if we chose english or french only at the beginning ?

To make easy buzz about RS:
- Provide a retweet button on news and forum topics. I don't know if it's better to use a tweetmeme button or a simple tweet button
- Provide a FB like button for news and topics

To simplify the game registering process:
- By using Oauth Facebook module, but requires RS serverside work. Not possible with TW because we can't get the user email from their API

This will for sure be a lot of work ;) , so what do you think is the most important there ?
And if I missed a great feature (easy to include), then we should add it to the list.

You must know that for now there is :
- one FB groupe about Robostrike, but not a lot of activity in...
- Two account on TW : one in french from me, not use theses days but 80 followers already. And a second one by yeku, in english.

Right now, Robostrike Facebook group doesn't have any activity (just me and 2 or 3 more players of about 80 people), just because the most of the people there don't play RS. All of them are old players and they have the notifications disabled, so they doesn't realize when there is something new.

When I created the Twitter account, I really thought that it would be more successfull (always thinking too positive), but it didn't have. Who of RS players have a Twitter account? Sure very few players... But sure that most of players have Facebook, but as you said, is really easy to post automatically stats on Facebook at the same time than in Twitter.

I think that the most important would be: "hello Im on RS" for friends (although I really doubt that this would work as we wish because, who would use it?).

So, an alternative more powerful could be the next: publish on fan RobostrikeFacebook (and on Twitter too if possible) if there is activity on RS and the number of players and number of games. If this could be done automatically, it would be really great!

RS news on social networks also sounds good and it's what I started in Twitter but with very few followers for the moment... But this on Facebook would be much better for the players who use it.

Of course, all this using the fan Facebook page.

These are the points that are more important for me and where we should start.

This sounds all very intersting to me.

Regardless what we will do first, we should all realize that we need one thing: patience

Every social network marketing needs time to reach it's aims. And there will be a long period without any success at all. When we start, we need to be aware of that and continue even without any success in sight.
Automatical content is one thing. Manual content is the other. And both are needed and of same value imo.

After all, if we stay on the track patiently, this will end in SEO as well :p

I'm ready for it.
@Chris: The most annoying thing about this APIs is that they can always suddenly change without warning. Happened to me a few times with FB API and our client called me and blamed us of course. Fortunately that doesn't happen too often ;)

About priorities, for me it would be these:
1. Extend players accounts
2. buzz ("i like" for news, stories and posts) (good for SEO as well)
3. warning button ("i am playing Robostrike")
4. automatic info like yeku suggested

And maybe a better dependance in FB ^^

Thanks for your feedback.
I thought I would start with TW which API is more simple, but it seems FB is the most wanted ... ;) so let's try to start with FB

Some new features we could add too:
- A like button to post a game replay link to the user's FB feed
- the same for a new published map or a map added to favorites

Here are some news about the work on progress for opening RS to social networks.
As you asked I started working with FB even if far more complicated than TW, but probably more efficient too for the purpose.

As you know FB API upgrades / downgrades quite monthly, so for some technical and boring reasons :smoke: I had to change the newly created fan page to make it compliant with the RS canvas app needed in order to use FB strongest API methods like dialogs (request, feed, friends, etc ...)
It means that as long as I'm not finished with testing the global workflow, we'd better use and promote the group page instead of the fan page.
Then we'll populate and give life to the new fan page when FB buttons' work across RS will be over.

As far as I know, all the features previously discussed here may be implemented. Some can probably be seen in a week or 2, I hope so :D

To all young players  : don't trust that ! It's a chris-time, you need to multiply the "a week or 2" by an unknowed factor. :D:D:D
