The new UI and other stuff

In this post I would like to point out some personal concerns/dislikes about the new interface and while I'm already at it I will also mention some bugs I've stumbled upon.

So as to not just critise the work you've done here, I wanna say that I in general l really like the changes of the last big update. I get the feeling that the whole game runs a lot smoother and faster, especially during  transitions between rooms/ windows/ layers (don't know what to call it). Also the new map-management system and the 'tab' navigation I call a big improvement.
At first I couldn't stand the new graphical design at all, as it seemed so seperated from the actual game itself, but I've gotten used to it and wouldn't change it back! But still there is 3 major things I would like to be adapted to a more pleasant usage.

  1. Altogether the new design has become way to dark and personally I find it way more exhausting for the eyes now as there are no highlights. All text doesn't have enough contrast to the background. Basically everything is just gray. This if for the tabs, listed maps, chat...(when not active through selection or hovering..)
  2. The flash area itself in the browser window has notably decreased with the update (or is this due to a browser update I did around the same time?) to a point, where it again, 'hurts' my eyes to use it. There is a fullscreen-option, but having more clicks to do, a browser window more and more waiting time for it to get loaded very much conflicts with my ('short attention span') surfing habits and annoys me to do so. Is it not possible to make the flash-field auto adapt according to screen size? I got alot blank area around the flash-field.
  3. With the old version I almost never failed to finish my move in time, whereas now it constantly happens to me. The timer needs to be more obvious, whether by making it bigger, placing it more within the eyesight (so closer to the map), and /or making it brighter (particularly the last seconds flashing).

Everything following now are just minor issues and flaws. I wouldn't mind at all if it wasn't changed, but for the sake of it...

  1. On the scoreboard, when hovering your mouse over a player it will give you additional information about the points distribution of this single player. For a convenient overview, why not show it for all the players at once.
  2. In the players-room there is this little status bullet next to the names, that changes to orange when somebody joins a game. Could this colour please be changed to one that differs more to the neutral status. I can only make out a differnce when I tilt back my screen.
  3. Whilest playing in a game, I don't get this little popup window when hovering over the little row of joined robots on top of the map. As a visitor I do.

  5. The german translation of the game is really messed up. But I guess Dharo, Realtime and me still manage to get around ;).
  6. Following is a bug i had for many years and through several version updates. In the 'my maps' listing I got two maps overlaping and at the same time a gap further below, +some animated bar showing up. See image: http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3203/xmaplist.png
  7. Whilest playing 'DangerZone5' I get robots fading over walls (also on another race, but can't remember which). Once I even shot a robot through a wall. I get this everytime I play the map.See image: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/851/xrobwall.png
  8. When naming maps it alows me to use symbols like ' ,%#... but it is not possible to start such a game. Instead when I try I start bugging like hell and need to refresh a couple of times before it stops.
  9. I really want to be able to favoritise more maps!
  10. Something is strange about this texteditor, it keeps jumping around for me when typing, can't pinpoint why...
     

You have to thank Dharo for this, he kept pushing me to write all of this down xD.
In fact I think nothing of this is really important, compared to there beeing so few players around recently. I hope it's just due to the good summer... I feel kinda bad to see all of you Admins and Modos put so much effort into this game for such a small ( and declining?) community of players. Well thumbs up and a big thanks to all of you!

tl,dr: New UI = awesome, but too dark + small

Thank you funka for this nice feedback. I agree to quite all you mentioned (this is usually hard to see when you're "inside" as I am).
I'll take all this into account for the next improvements asap.
I'm sure people will come back to RS soon, but some tuning and upgrades remains to do. Let's keep on working for RS to grow ;)

You cannot. That's a privilegue for admins, modos and so-called contributors. I have edited your post and got rid of the html img tags in there. (No need to include them here, if you ask me...)

Oh yes I know. I'm going to improve it soon. The former translator seems not to have been a native-speaker at all.
I am used to play online games in english language in order to make international conversation easier. Since a few months I switched back to German too and it feels a bit like a "Realsatire" to me. :D 
(Sorry to all non-Germans, but there seems to be no sufficient translation of that German term.)

Stay tuned and please don't hesitate to post any more critics / suggestions.

Seem to be a problem with saving own made maps.
When a map is modified, appear map saved, but when edit again, the changes are not saved

Thanks for solving the problem Chris, it looks to run ok now.


Another improvement that looks with problems is the slider's animation. The maps with a lot of sliders run very slow, and after some minutes playing i feel a unpleasant sensation of movement.

Realtime and me have been talking about it and we are in agreement.

Could be good have a switch on UI to activate/desactivate sliders animation.

I want to say too that i think the animation on preview of maps is really good and don't affect the game. There is not reason to activate/desactivate (i think)

OK but please, could you test the solo map "danger zone 4" with only 6 lasers and tell me how much time it takes on your PC for a complete turn at speed 8 (set it in options screen)

Tested, looks to work fine, aproximately 10 sec per turn

The size is much better now and I think you've also changed the status bullet, it's fine now. The bug I had under 'my maps' is  gone too. :rolleyes:

I love the look of the new UI! Are you able to set the chat box to be able to copy and paste again? With the language barrier it would help me and others alot. I use a translation program, but it is very time consuming to manually input the other languages on there to be converted to english. Thank you in advance if you do implant this in here again!
