Some years ago, we talked about a new RS feature for playing team games in multiplayer mode.
As you know, I ever kept distance with persistant teams development because it would take much time and doesn't fit to RS gameplay. But instant team games could be a nice and pretty "affordable" new option for multiplayer games if we keep it simple. The simpliest way for the beginning would be:

  • team game is a new checkbox option in multiplayer game settings
  • 2 players teams size only
  • the team subscription depends on the join order: initiator and first player in the first team, then the seconds team, etc ...
  • the number of enabled teams depends on the max players selected by the initiator (ex 6 = 3 teams)
  • the game starts automatically when this max number is complete (ex if max 5 the game starts when 4 joined)
  • the game can be started manually but only if at least 4 players joined. If there is an odd last one, he will be kicked out :crybaby:
  • players in the same team can be hurt by each other (no friendly fire) because they also can be pushed
  • death match win : no other teams alive, race win : all the marks reached by one or another players inside a team
  • points : the same than in no team games ranking for loosers, and half the best winbonus of the winning team for each winner
  • one question remaining: how to distinguish the bots inside a team : similar colors, special sign / cockpit shape, any idea ?

Please let me know your inputs, pros cons and/or different ideas for this matter.

My opinion :

It's clearly boring to speak about this when all teams are dead...

Now, i want to say that it will be great for RS to have this new system, but... Why we can't have a real improvement ? If we can shoot others of the team it's a really strange team games, no ? Other games do this ?

1. Maybe, we can have a new system of count of Life Point for that ? A common count of LP. For example 10 points. When it come to zero, all robots of the team explode... Could be great for team games. Could have a real sense with that.

2. More of that, we can have a common activation of extra-kits ? A shield activated give 3 points of protection of the common count of LP ? Same for restoring LP. For the rest, same rules that in solo multiplayer games. A bomb touch one robot, an automatic shoot is for only one bot, but when one robot of the team take an extra-kits, the other can use it. Maybe it's too different but it could be great for having a new play of team.

3. More of that. We need a special space on the forum for teams, with a special sign of disctinction. We can have two things : we choose a logo ourself, or you (chris) give a limited possibility. This logo could appear on the cockpit of each players. For example, a blue diagonal mark, a pink square (for ladies xd), etc. This logo can appear in the game and in the main room.

Great Chris!!

I think this can be another thing to attract and maintain people RS. I remember some unscored teamed games very good and if is simple can be a great thing.

About your question:

Could be a nice thing to maintain the cockpit color for player and change the grey color of chains by team color.

Another way could be use the cockpit color for team and use a number or letter for the player.


About Amloo post:

I disagree with you in points 1 and 2, i don't think that it can be "affordable" for Chris in a little time, i don't saying is a bad idea, only it could be good in a looong future.

About point 3, i think could be a great idea if Chris has time enough.

A simplified version could be:

When you choose team game appears 4 different sign to choose, i think it could be easy and at same time you pick the team logo, you are in this team,  then the order on joining the game is not important.

I'll try to post a screen to explain better.

Yeah, team matches would be wonderful.

@Amloo: You seem to have misunderstood Chris' purposes. It's not about reinvoking the good old teams like elecs, spirits, east or west. The ideas is just to have matches with teamplay.

Your first 2 points are nice ideas (especially the first one: the lives counted for the team, not for the players). Anyway I am not sure if they are easy enough to understand for players.

Why this? I would rather favor 2 teams only. (so 2-2, 3-3 or 4-4)
Or would teams of 2 be much easier for you to code?

Hmm.. Why not allowing only even amounts of players when the option "team game" is checked? I don't get it ^^

Good for making things easy. And I could also imagine a penalty for killing your team-members ^^.
Friendly fire could still be an option for future delevepment though.

A player needs to "find" his bot on the screen quickly. Would be confusing with 2 bots of the same colour. 
I've discussed this with yeku, some weeks ago. Our solution was a new special bot chassis. Easiest way would be to create bots with iron body (dark grey), golden body, copper body and the good old aluminium body to distinguish the teams.
Well.. this would be easier with only 2 teams, or course =P

I tried to do a fast simulation for identificating teams, i think the most clear idea is change chains/body color.

Colors in image are not to much good, but with good colors could be the best and easy option.

@dharokan : i understood what chris is saying but for motivate players to play in teams, it's better to have some teams like in the past on Robostrike.

You don't have any team ok. Your choice. But teams are really attractive for playing. There is a special spirit in the team and players can be better in teams that in solo mode...

AND IF I WANT TO SAY THAT ITS BORING ABOUT THE DEATH OF TEAMS, I SAY IT...

Behind this, there is a real ask :

Why create a team games now ? After 10 years ? After 5 years about asking this ? We lost the old forum where all this ideas was writing... And how many times it will during to build ? I'm not sure that Chris (quite alone) can do this.

Where is bill ? Where is Tchitch ? And where can we find an other official admin (dharo can be it ) ? That the key of a real transformation in the future for me...

I'am the first to want this team games, i always wanted it... and if you just speak about the team games for nothing before 3 years... I don't want to participate. See you in 3 years. What is the real goal in this improvement ?

Sorry, Amloo. I really thought there was a misunderstanding :confused:

Imho those 2 points are completely different. The ingame team-mechanisms are a good way to have more variety in the game. The player clans (i use that term in order to seperate them from ingame teaming) are a step further. I agree that these social aspect can be very motivationg for some players - no doubt. But it's much more complicated and .. well .. one step ahead.

Anyway, the ingame team-mechanics have to be implemented before a clan system could work. So I suggest to see it as a first step towards your goals too ;)

Maybe it could better to permit to teams to have a special official group into the forum first... that don't take a lot of time, there is no programmation for that. I understood what do you say. If my english seems not really correct, i'am better in comprehension. So... what is next ?

I think all this is very clear if all of us read what each other wrote. No need to keep complaining on the slow evolution of RS, it won't make it faster, because I haven't more time for this and we'll never find another crazy admin like me spending so much time on a free multiplayer game with no income for it (but only expenses). 
The game is still fine and already much better than it was at its beginning. Remember all that has been upgraded during the last two years.
So I suggest to keep cool and prioritize what can be the greatest improvements for RS using the time I can spend on it in the better way.
 
A new "instant" team game option, can be great for gameplay and players motivation (new ones, and also experimented ones).
At the opposite, I won't develop persistant teams inside the game, because RS isn't a MMORPG. But if players want to be part of a virtual team and have their forum on RS, no problem, l will do it. It's quite esay to do and another subject we can talk about when there will be more players here.

About the INSTANT TEAM game option, I first suggested the most simple way for me to do it. But I noticed some points here you really want to change and I could change, while keeping it "affordable":
- friendly fire: no damages inside a team with laser, bomb and blast => OK
- 2 teams as default with 2,3 or 4 players inside => OK
- but the team list (who's where) will depend on the joining order only for the first release
- sharing goodies and lives: I don't know, I have to check the code, but probably not easy to do.

I will, but if the initiator wants to start manually when only 5 players joined, we'll have to choose between 2 versus 3, or kick one player out.

This new game option will probably take about one month to develop and test.
I will start on it after some SEO and linking urgent work in the next weeks.

I totally agree with Dharo.

As Dharo said, i understand that those 2 things are really different.

I think in team mode that purposes Chris you can play casual team with different players in different games, without have to change nick and have to be in a clan.

At same time the clan idea is good, and can be created a section in forums, but i think is OTHER idea totally compatible with Chris idea.
